The story of the Vilulf family can be traced back to their Viking ancestry, to the time when some members fled to the Indian Ocean after the collapse of the Nassau Republic, or to the moment when the surviving Vilulfs, after a long period of silence, chose to rise again in Scandinavia.

As for Brynnhild, her story begins with Lagertha.

Lagertha was the daughter of “Redbeard” Erik, the head of the family. Erik made the Vilulf name feared across the Norwegian Sea, and Lagertha, bearing her ancestor’s name, carried on this legacy when she took over the fleet. Her life was equally legendary, and her reputation became so fearsome that a common prayer spread across the nearby seas:

“God save us from encountering the Vilulfs.”

But what they feared was not just Erik or Lagertha, but the entire clan. The Vilulfs operated as a tightly united warrior group, bound by both tradition and defiance of it. They were allied yet unwilling to fully unite, a presence despised by all sides. Their freedom shattered the era’s rigid prejudices.

Brynnhild was born into this collective, arriving on a stormy night when enemies launched a surprise attack while Lagertha was in labor. As the newborn’s cries pierced through the tempest, the shifting winds turned the tide of battle in the Vilulfs’ favor. At dawn, Lagertha “crowned” her infant daughter in the name of the Valkyries.

Raised with adoration and boundless freedom, Brynnhild idolized her mother and aspired to be a captain like her. However, Lagertha refused to let her daughter take on the dangerous life of a seafarer. She also didn’t want the burden of leadership to weigh down Brynnhild’s happiness and freedom, so she instead trained her eldest son as heir.

But Brynnhild saw this as a sign of her own inadequacy—that her mother did not choose her because she wasn’t good enough. Determined to prove herself, she trained relentlessly, night and day, with her older brother as her closest companion. Eventually, she earned the ship “The Vinland” and a bow handcrafted by Lagertha.

To Brynnhild, these gifts were her mother’s recognition, and she was overjoyed. From then on, she drifted further from the family, recruiting foreign sailors, celebrating wildly after every small victory, and striving to build her own crew. She wanted to become a revered captain, to prove that Lagertha had chosen the right successor.

But Brynnhild was still a fledgling. She had no idea what kind of resistance a clan like theirs had to face to survive in this era. She did not know how many times Erik, Lagertha, and countless others had intercepted Death itself to protect them. She did not understand that greed makes traitors, that simply boarding The Vinland was no guarantee of loyalty.

And so, under a blood-red sunset, Brynnhild found herself shackled as bait at an execution dock, while Lagertha and her crew sailed toward her through crashing waves.

At that moment, for the first time, Brynnhild hated her own birth, for her existence had fulfilled a prophecy—one that led warriors down a path of no return…
